Captain Bill Carli
Like many visitors who come to the San Juans for a vacation and end up staying here, my wife Christy and I both realized that this was going to become our home the very first time the ferry pulled into Friday Harbor. Twenty-three years later we are still here. The Island is our home, and we truly enjoy sharing its wonders with others.
For over ten years we owned and operated the Argyle House Bed & Breakfast. During that time we lodged over 20,000 B & B guests. We have since sold the B & B, but the same joy and enthusiasm of sharing this paradise carries over to our Whale Watching/Marine Eco-tourism excursions. Our customers sure seem to think so! Read our customer endorsement pages.
All whale watch trips will be on Soulmate, our 2006 25 foot C-Dory power boat. Our new boat is perfect for six passenger viewing. With cruising speed of over 20 knots we can get to the whales faster, giving you more on-sight viewing time. Our speed also enables us to reach the whales when they are out of "normal" viewing range for other boats. Soulmate's interior was custom built to enable inside seating for six, we also have outside seating for six as well. Soulmate is powered by a 2006 Honda 135 hp four stroke outboard, simply the quietest, most fuel efficient, non-polluting marine engine there is.
Soulmate has a private enclosed bathroom
The Orca Whales
The San Juan Islands are the best place in the world to view the Orcas in the wild.
The whales are grouped into three family groups called pods, which act as one extended family. The local Orca Whales have recently been placed under protection by the Federal Endanged Species Act. The impact of pollutants in our local waters and the diminished salmon runs are the leading reasons for this new classification. Our goal is to offer non- impact, educational whale watching tours. This is accomplished by giving the Orca whales the respect they deserve, and the space that they need.
Bill is also the author of Sunset Run, and the Captain Mondo adventure/romance series. His first novel Sunset Run published in 2006 has met with critical acclaim. The story is set initially in Europe and then the Pacific Northwest. It includes adventure, good vs. evil, kidnapping, and romance on the high seas. Here is a small taste of the story from the book cover:
Captain Mondo isn’t looking for trouble. He just wants to be left alone while he sails the world with Amy Wilson, the love of his life. It is a wonderful adventure of romance and exploration for the two of them aboard Smokin’ Joe, his forty-four foot sailboat.
When Amy mysteriously jumps ship, Mondo hasn’t a clue as to why. When she disappears from the face of the earth, he knows something is terribly wrong, and he must find her, even if it kills him.
From tropical South Sea Islands to rugged British Columbia, Mondo must use every trick he has ever learned to stay one step ahead of an evil that holds Amy Wilson spellbound.

Parting Thoughts from Captain Bill
To truly experience the natural beauty of the San Juan Islands, you need to see them from the water. To experience the Orca whales you can't go to Marine World, you need to see them in their native environment. I have been amazed at the curiosity that the Orcas have displayed to us, as we watched them. I can not help but feel that we are watching a creature as intelligent as we are, as curious as we are, and as fun loving as we try to be. |
